In May, Tina Taylor joined the Foyer Federation in the newly-created position of Finance Manager. Get to know Tina as she shares her motivation for working in the social change sector, her day-to-day tasks and the biggest challenges of her job.
Tell us about you and what fuels your passion for this work.
Hello, I’m Tina, one of the newest members of the Foyer Fed team! I’m originally from Surrey but have called Liverpool my home for the past thirty years. I have a background of working in finance, operations and office management in various charities; the last place I worked was Citizens Advice and before that a young people’s theatre company. I like working somewhere that is helping society and the wellbeing of people, particularly young people. I feel like I'm contributing to their good work – even if I’m behind the scenes myself.
Tell us about your role at the Foyer Federation and what are you most looking forward to.
Looking after the money is quite important! Day to day, I process financial transactions, report to the board on the finances and make sure people get paid. We have quite a small operations team, so between us we also support various projects, which could mean helping to book venues or paying young consultants – and overall making sure we’re running a good organisation.
The main challenge, as with all charities, is income. We have to be constantly applying for funds and earning income – we can never rest on our laurels and are always looking to the next financial year.
What are your goals for the role and what exciting things can we expect?
I’m enjoying reshaping the processes and procedures, which had been outsourced until recently. I like bringing order and making sure everything is working as effectively and efficiently as it can. I hope I can bring a level of reassurance and trust.
What are your hopes for young people and the future of Foyers?
I hope that no young person needs to experience homelessness and that they get the support to build a home of their own. It’s difficult to think about anything else until you have somewhere safe and secure. I also hope we continue to show the value in supporting young people to move on positively in their lives.
Final thoughts?
The team is excellent – everyone is really, really nice and they’re all-round good people. Every person is dedicated to what they do and passionate about the social change sector. It’s a great environment to work in, it keeps us all on track.
It’s hard being a young person these days, lots of people don’t get the best start. The Foyer Federation supports young people to be the best that they can – and I’m grateful to be able to play my part.
