Ethan, a resident of Newhaven Foyer, was shortlisted in October for the Using Strengths and Talents award as part of Room for Young People. What stood out to the panel was his personal resilience in the face of obstacles such as dyslexia and social anxiety, his determination to overcome any challenges, and his generosity of spirit in helping other young people to get fit and learn self-defence. We caught up with Ethan to find out more.

Before coronavirus hit the UK, Ethan was studying an electrical course. “Studying was brilliant,” he said. “The best thing I’ve ever done.” Then, when lockdown happened, he lost his job and couldn’t pay the monthly fee anymore. “It was very stressful.”

Ethan called on his personal resilience and determination and contacted the course leaders to explain his situation. It paid off: he was able to continue studying during the national lockdown and develop his skills through this uncertain period.
Ethan’s determination and drive stand out a mile. He’s committed to his studies, and keeps himself motivated through reading self-help books like The Power of Habit. This also helps him to face up to his dyslexia. “I try to push through it and keep learning the best way I can,” he told us. “I try to enjoy what I learn, and if I don’t get it right, that’s okay. The more I enjoy, the more I take risks and the more I learn.”

He is also a talented boxer, and he took as much time as possible to train during lockdown. “I take is seriously. I want to do this, and I’m very determined,” he said. Over summer, he helped other young people in Newhaven Foyer to learn to defend themselves and get fit at the same time, and lots of them have stuck with his programme even now!

Being able to train others is the result of a lot of hard work from Ethan, who has spent a lot of time working on his social anxiety. “Before I came to the Foyer, I couldn’t speak to anyone. I didn’t realise it until I spoke to staff, but I was having panic attacks. Through my time at the Foyer, I ate healthy and starting living a different life, trying to talk to people, reading self-help books, taking risks and trusting people. It’s still a work in progress, but I’ve come a long way.”

Right now, Ethan has something else to celebrate – he has been invited to box for Scotland! “I was offered a spot and I took it. I’m looking forward to training with the team. It will help me improve as a sportsman.”

Congratulations Ethan on your fantastic achievements this year. We’re excited to see what the future will hold for you!
