Whitehaven Foyer

Type of Accommodation:

Self-contained single occupancy flats and single flats with own bathroom and shared kitchen

Service Overview:

The Whitehaven Foyer was opened in 2016 by Prince Charles. Purchased as a derelict building in 2009 by Howgill Centre and Impact Housing, it was renovated between 2014 and 2016 to become West Cumbria’s first Young People’s Foyer. It offers a welcoming positive space, with an attractive atrium area that includes an excellent monument to its former YMCA history in the form of an art work featuring internal images of the building and displaying positive quotes from former inhabitants.

The Foyer benefits from enterprise elements including rented offices, a training room and a shop, all of which are run by the Foyer Charity. The building comprises 19 units of shared and self-contained flats that are split over three floors, with the first floor offering two bedroomed units with shared kitchen and bathroom, while the top floor benefits from self-contained flats. Residents view the top floor as a first step towards move on and the Foyer also benefits from access to its own designated move on flats near to the property.
