The Foyer Federation believes in transforming the lives of young people and putting young people at the heart of everything we do. So practice what we preach right..?
On Monday 28th November, three young people from our network of Foyers led the young people’s panel process in the search for our new CEO. It was their opportunity to sit on the other side of the desk and be the interviewers rather than the interviewees. We wanted this experience to be integral to our CEO recruitment plans and for young people to have a genuine experience and say on who gets the job.
We spent some time in the morning preparing for the big interviews… What does it feel like to be interviewed? How do we want the candidates to feel? What does a good question look like? What is an open question and what is a closed question?
The panel then came up with some Advantaged Thinking activities to ease the candidates in to the interview before grilling them with 10 tough but thought provoking questions to make their bid for the Foyer Federation CEO prize!
The young people who led the panel learnt a lot from the day. But don’t take our word for it! Here’s what they had to say:
“It gave us a chance to express ourselves. We don’t get to do that usually. I think it was really nice to meet potential leaders. It was also a great way for me to educate them on how young people live and our perspective. It was a great experience. I would definitely do it again, I enjoyed the experience.”
“I learnt about first impressions and how it can affect your interview and how people can sometimes unfortunately make their decisions based on people’s appearances. I would do it again, it was fun. I am glad I came.”
“It was a good experience. I learnt new things. I learnt about interviews and the importance of not judging people and Advantaged Thinking; to always turn a negative into a positive. I would do it again; it goes great on my CV.”
Thank you to Basildon Foyer and Grenfell Foyer for facilitating their residents’ involvement in this important milestone in the Foyer Federation’s history.
We plan to announce our new CEO in the coming weeks. Watch this space!
