Chance for Change’s Rites of Passage programme, funded by the Big Lottery and externally evaluated, is an outdoor personal development programme for young people aged 18-28 designed specifically to develop independence skills.

Chance for Change specialises in delivering personal outdoor development programmes for young adults aged 18-28 who have challenging backgrounds. We work with young people from our residential base at Striding Edge which is set in the beautiful mountain landscape above the village of Glenridding in the northern Lake District National Park.

The programme  focuses on a young person’s:

  • Future
  • build their self-worth
  • talents
  • confidence so that they move towards independent living and adulthood.

For this reason the programme is called ‘Rites of Passage’. It is delivered by skilled and highly experienced staff and consists of structured stages over the course of six months. Through facilitation Chance for Change show participants how to plan journeys, cook, manage travel, accommodation and food budgets, work collaboratively in groups and stay safe. Full kit and equipment is supplied with personal spending budgets given to undertake the programme. Referrals are taken nationwide.

During the programme participants will experience beautiful and remote parts of the UK, sleeping and eating outdoors and volunteering their services in youth hostels. Through these experiences they will have positive stories to tell, new friends, new life skills and a strong connection to the outdoors. Their life will become richer and reinvigorate them with a new found sense of purpose.

If you know young people who are needing a bit of a spur to take that critical first step towards breaking away from support and taking responsibility for their independence and think that this might be a programme that could help them to do that, please contact Greg Barton, CEO at Chance for Change: greg@chanceforchange.org.uk, Mobile: 07717741539. Happy to discuss the programme over the phone and meet separately. Application pack by request.
