Robert Craddock, an ex Rugeley Foyer resident – talks about becoming a Volunteer Co-ordinator

“I was appointed as a volunteer co-ordinator at my Foyer. I was grateful and surprised to be honest as I didn’t think I would be a great person for the job, as my social skills are not the best in the world. Battling apathy from other residents was hard at the beginning so I decided we needed something to get all the residents involved in. We had a community room but it is very dingy and dark. It needed redecorating. Unfortunately for that we needed money, and the YMCA Foyer is not the richest organisation in the world… we waited a very long time and eventually someone got back to us and told us we had secured £17,000 from Youth Bank which funds youth orientated projects and £1750 from the Big Boost which is Lottery funded. I was over the moon at this news.

I am amazed at myself and how far I have come. My confidence has improved no end, my self esteem has greatly improved and there is no way I could ever thank Foyer enough for the help and support it has given me in the past 1½ years.

This was going to give us the chance to let every resident in the Foyer benefit one way or another. All would learn new skills and gain practical abilities, and look at the room and feel extremely proud. I wanted it to be something everyone could say ’yeah, we did that and I’m glad we did’. It was a big thing to accomplish and one I would never have believed I could achieve only a year ago I’m still working with the Foyer Federation and very interested in ways which the Foyer can improve itself and its service to young people. They are a great organisation and I have got a lot out of my time with them. Now I want to put a lot back in to improve other people’s stay at the YMCA Foyer and to help others do as much as I have.

I am amazed at myself and how far I have come. My confidence has improved no end, my self esteem has greatly improved and there is no way I could ever thank Foyer enough for the help and support it has given me in the past 1½ years. I have a lot of ambition, drive and ultimately the desire to better myself which I never had before I came here. I hope to get better and do even more in the future and hope I can continue to do as well as I have. Thank you Foyer Federation!”
